3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?” 4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” 7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” 8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.” 10 The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.” 11 Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.” (Matthew 19:3-12)
Here we see that the Pharisees came to test the Lord Jesus and asked him whether divorce is allowed. The Lord Jesus said that God created man and woman in the beginning, and man shall leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two shall become one. Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate. The Pharisees said that Moses allowed a man to divorce his wife by giving her a certificate of divorce. Jesus said that it was because of the hardness of people’s hearts that Moses allowed this. Jesus went on to say that if a man divorces his wife except for adultery, commits adultery; and if a man marries a divorced woman, also commits adultery.
For I hate divorce, says the Lord, the God of Israel, And the one who covers his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. You should be on guard, then, for your life, and you must not break faith. (Malachi 2:16)
Here we see that God hates divorce. God is faithful. He wants people to be faithful to one another, and He also wants us to be faithful to Him.
10 To the married, however, I give this instruction (not I, but the Lord): A wife should not separate from her husband 11 —and if she does separate she must either remain single or become reconciled to her husband—and a husband should not divorce his wife. (1 Corinthians 7:10-11)
Here the Apostle Paul also said that people should not divorce, the husband should not leave his wife, and the wife should not leave her husband.
and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” (Mark 10:12)
Here it says that if a wife divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery, just as if the husband divorced his wife.
32 I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. 33 But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, (1 Corinthians 7:32-33)
The Lord Jesus also said that some people do not marry for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, in order to be more devoted to the Lord. The Apostle Paul also says that single people are more devoted to the Lord, while those with wives worry about worldly matters. Paul said this so that people can be more devoted to the Lord.
May God bless you and your family! 🙏😊
