Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. (Matthew 5:33-37)
The Lord Jesus said here that it was said to the people long ago: “Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.” This refers to the people in the Old Testament who swore oaths to the Lord, they should not break their oaths, but should keep them to the Lord. The Lord Jesus said: I tell you, do not swear an oath at all. The heaven is the throne of God, the earth is the footstool of God, Jerusalem is the city of the Great King, that is, the city of God, and the head of man is under the management of God, because man cannot change the color of his hair. These all refer to not swearing to God. The Lord Jesus continued: All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;. The Lord Jesus wants us to be honest and speak the truth. We should not make promises casually to others; the promises we make must be fulfilled. The evil one here refers to Satan, the devil, who is always lying. The Lord Jesus wants us to speak the truth, to mean what we say, let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’
May God bless you and your family. 🙏😊
