22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matthew 6:22-23)
The Lord Jesus said, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” This refers to spiritual eye, spiritual sight, and spiritual insight. The eyes are healthy means the eyes are single, before this passage it talks about lay treasures in heaven, not on the earth, after this passage it says, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Here it says that a person cannot serve both God and money. This passage is sandwiched between the two and connected with them. A person with healthy eyes perceive God and serving God, treasures in heaven, spiritual things are precious. People with healthy eyes, the whole body will be full of light, their spiritual life will shine for the Lord and glorify God, but unhealthy eyes cannot perceive God, the treasures in heaven, spiritual things as precious.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Here the Lord Jesus says that He is the light of the world. Those who follow Him will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life and live in the light.
