The Pharisees and Sadducees asked for a sign

The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away. (Matthew 16:1-4)
The Pharisees and Sadducees came here to test the Lord Jesus, asking him to show a sign from heaven. They saw the Lord Jesus performing many miracles, but they did not believe that those miracles came from God, they didn’t believe that he was the Messiah. Even if the Lord Jesus showed a sign from heaven, they would not have believed. They only wanted to test the Lord Jesus. The Lord Jesus told them that they knew how to interpret the appearance of sky, but they didn’t know how to interpret the signs of the time, the miracles he performed. The Lord Jesus continued, “There is no sign to show him except for the sign of Jonah.” In the Old Testament, God asked the prophet Jonah to proclaim a message of repentance to Nineveh, because he did not obey, as a result, he stayed in the belly of a fish for three days and three nights. Here the Lord Jesus talked about the sign he would give: he would be crucified on the cross, and he would stay on the earth for three days and three nights. After three days, he would be resurrected. The resurrection of the Lord Jesus three days after his death gives us hope of resurrection, hope that more people will accept the Lord Jesus as their Lord and Savior, receive the hope of resurrection, and receive eternal life.
May God bless you and your family! 🙏😊
