Jesus Raises Jairus’ Daughter from the Dead

40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.” 50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” 51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.” 53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened. (Luke 8:40-42, 49-56)
The above is about Jesus raising Jairus’ daughter from the dead. The passage between these two passage is Luke 8:43-48, which we studied last time, about Jesus healing a woman with the issue of blood. Jairus was the synagogue leader, and his only daughter, about twelve years old, was dying. He humbly bowed before Jesus and asked him to heal her. On his way to Jairus’ house, Jesus healed the woman with the issue of blood, but learned that Jairus’ daughter was dead. Because of death, there was resurrection, Jesus raised her from the dead. Jesus said that she was asleep; in Jesus’ eyes, death is like sleep, for he can raise people up. It says that her spirit returned. When a person dies, the spirit leaves the body. Here, the Lord Jesus brought her spirit back, and she was resurrected. Here we see once again that the Lord Jesus is the Lord of life, His divinity. Here the Lord Jesus told her parents not to tell anyone what he did. We see again that the Lord Jesus leads different people differently. We previously learned about a man possessed by many demons. After the Lord Jesus cast out the demons, He wanted him to go back and proclaim the miraculous works He had done for him.
John chapter 11 tells us the Lord Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. When the Lord Jesus first learned of Lazarus’s illness, He did not immediately go to heal him, but waited four days after his death, then raised him from the dead. This made the disciples believe that He had the authority to raise people from the dead.
May God bless you and your family!
